The Strategy
Training retrievers for hunters!!
Our dog training program starts with basic obedience. The foundation of a working retriever is heel, sit, here and kennel (enter). These commands are the priority in our training regimen. It is ingrained in our pups from the beginning. All well bred retriever pups will retrieve (chase). Once you're sure they will chase, nothing is gained by throwing repetitive bumpers in the yard. However, the pup has to be taught basic obedience to the point of habit formation. While other trainers are running numerous marks, including doubles and triples with young pups, we are still working on obedience. Even if our dogs don't pick up every bird (they most likely will) they are obedient. You and your friends will enjoy hunting over them. Obedience training is the best thing you can do for you and your dog. Most of the requirements on a hunt are based on obedience. Having a dog that sits patiently in the blind, parking lot, on the tailgate, or on the ATV while you are preparing for the hunt is safer for your dog. In the parking lot alone there are distractions and safety concerns, other hunters, trucks, ATV's, boats, decoy carts, etc.. Your dog sitting patiently waiting for you is a must.Whether in the house, on the hunt, or anywhere in between, an obedient dog is a pleasure to be around. Nothing ruins a hunt faster than a dog that is unruly and uncooperative. We encourage you to check us out. We believe our retrievers will exceed your expectations.
There are two major premises in our dog training program, (1) every dog is different, (2) every person is different.
Each pup has a different personality, they learn differently, and are motivated by different rewards, i.e. petting, praise, food, retrieves, etc. One program or regimen will not work for every pup. When we acquire a pup we pride ourselves in being able to “read” the pup. Then develop the Strategy for each pup to fit the owner’s needs, whether it be a hunting retriever, a family companion or something in between.
As previously mentioned, the other aspect of training retrievers is that every person is different. Everyone has a different “wish list” for their next retriever. Some of the possibilities include a hunting dog that will retrieve downed game, or compete in field trials, hunt tests, or obedience tests. Others prefer the retriever as a family pet or companion that is obedient and a pleasure to spend time with. The list varies widely because each person’s expectations for their retriever are different.
Before we sell you a retriever or train one for you we will interview you to find out what you expect from your retriever. Then we develop the training program to train your retriever to perform at the level you desire. Periodically we would like for you to come and participate in training to monitor our progress and to familiarize you with the appropriate commands.
